“You’re right Dad. It’s life I just wish it had turned out differently for her, but I’m glad to see stepmom smiling again.”

“Boy as long as she’s surrounded by all of you she’s happy. Just wait until Star has that baby she’s really going to lose her mind. She’ll probably whip out the crochet needles tonight.”

“You know it!”

Andre grabbed Starlina’s coat and hung it up in the small closet on his way into the living room. His parent’s house was beautiful and Patricia had the nerve to have an all-white leather sofa, loveseat and beautiful real gold end tables. Brandon was sitting on the floor with his video game on pause. Starlina was seated on the couch asking him how things were going. She had been in touch with him daily since Andre put him out. Andre noticed that Brandon was in need of a haircut. He had a mini-Afro and normally wore his hair cut low.

“Say hi to Andre.”

“What’s up Dre?” Brandon didn’t look at him. He kept his focus on the television screen.

“Not much. How are you?”

“I’m cool.”

Andre made his way into the dining room and joined his sister, Greg and his father at the table. The table was perfectly set and the turkey and all the sides were on the table. Patricia loved to cook, and was excellent at it.

“Baby, you should go and talk to him.” Starlina whispered in his ear.

“Ok.” Andre still didn’t know what to say, but he got up from the table and returned to the living room. Brandon was playing a basketball game, so Andre sat down on the floor beside him.

“You picked a crummy team like New York.” Andre needed to break the ice somehow.

“New York’s okay for this game but not in real life.”

“I hear you. So what’s it like staying with my parents?”

“It’s alright. Mr. James has me working like a slave around here though. He had me helping him to repair a pipe in the basement the other day.”

Brandon laughed.

“That’s my Dad. He’s a handyman and a drill sergeant.”

“Dre, I’m sorry about everything that went down last month. I was wrong and shouldn’t have done what I did.”

“I appreciate the apology.”

“Dinner’s ready!” Patricia yelled.

“Well, Brandon I just want the best for you. I want you to finish school, go off to college and live out the purpose that God has for your life. I’m……I’m still here for you if you need to talk.”

Brandon paused the game before getting up. He extended his hand to Andre to help him up.

“Thanks.”

“When can I come back home?”

“When I see some changes in your life. I would like for you to return to church though and get back into the swing of things in teen church.”

“Ok, I can do that.”

“I’m not saying that you can never come back home, but prove to me that you can really do better!”

“Deal.”

Andre stretched out his arms and gave Brandon a father son hug.

“I missed you Dad.”

“Dad?” Andre released him and wanted to be sure that he heard him correctly.
